To design lighting for hotels you must create first different scenarios that are linked between them by a conceptual thread.
It’s a lighting designer’s job to begin dividing the spaces into five large areas:
- Social areas.
Once areas are designed then you should start working on each of them independently and with individualized creative process.
Each area should always develop with different “lighting segments” where there will be areas that only need 1 level and others that may need up to 4 levels
HOTELS LIGHTING DESIGN SEGMENTS :
1. General Lighting
It is the main source of lighting throughout the area. It is the base lighting degree.
It allows guests and/or staff to move around the space.
When this lighting is diffuse it guarantees a feeling of well-being.
It’s ideal to have it fused into the architecture and that light emitters are unseen.
It’s generally recommended to be Neutral White or Warm White (3500K to 4200K) depending on the colors of the space
In service areas where we need the maximum alert and concentration of employees it is better to use a cold white temperature.

2. Hotels Specific Tasks Lights
This type of hotel lighting is used to focus targets with a higher intensity of lighting.
A 3:1 ratio is recommended in respect to general lighting in order to generate a nice contrast.
It may or may not be fused into the architecture. Generally Warm White (4000K to 4500K) temperature is used depending on the task you want to illuminate
An example of task-oriented lighting could be the front desk lighting where guests register or the restaurant’s tables lighting and buffet bar in the hotel restaurant.
3. The Emphasis Light:
This type of lighting serves to create dramatic emphasis on space using focused or spot light. Adds depth, contrast and creates a focal point for protagonists.
Highlights shapes, textures, colors or valuable items.
The ratio between emphasis light and general lighting should be 5:1.
This light is responsible for enhancing the architecture, its accents, its compositional objects. Its temperature depends on the object to be illuminated.
An example of emphasis lighting could be when we illuminate in a hotel a textured wall or a table with a large vase on it in the hotel lobby.
4. Solely Decorative Hotel Lighting:
This type of lighting in hotels serves not only as a contribution to the general lighting but also to enhance the space with a design element.
It includes pendants, appliques, chandeliers, table lamps, standing and cylinder.
They’re the elements that will give warmth and hospitality to the space.
These types of lamps are not integrated into the architecture.
5. Hotels Façade Lighting:
It is that lighting design that seeks to turn the building into an emblematic icon recognized between its competition and within the city.
Of course it must be in line with the urban environment.
It’s essential that maintenance and future replacement will not become a headache for the hotel.
In conclusion, always remember the following premises when making a lighting project for hotels:
- When you design a lighting project for a hotel focus 80% on the sensory and 20% on the functional.
- Never forget to address issues such as contemplation, relaxation and socialization as well as their technical development and profitability over time.
